With their help and support from my wife, I was able to document the Laramie, WY community until I graduated in May of 2023. Due to my wife's job, we relocated to West Virginia where I started making stories with different publications throughout the state. My family, when immigrating to the United States, originally settled in West Virginia, and there is a lot of my family heritage rooted in this state. Even though I haven’t lived in West Virginia until now, it feels like home everywhere I go and the people I meet make me fall in love with the state just a little more. The locomotive pulled into the Cheyenne Depot, during the final days of Cheyenne Frontier Days. 4014 is the last to remain operational of the 25 steam engines of this kind made in 1941. When the locomotive was still in use, the usual route of the Big Boy train class was across Wyoming to Utah. The 4014 made this journey until its retirement in 1961, although it was not until 2014 that the Big Boy would call Cheyenne home. Union Pacific retirees Bob Fryml and Bob Krieger work tirelessly, ensuring such documents that come to the UPHS are well cared for. Founded in 1984, the UPHS has worked towards the preservation of railroad history, and additionally manages a monthly magazine called The Streamliner. UPHS artifacts are cataloged and sent off to the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming. The 2022 convention was the first since 2019, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Krieger has been in the railroad business since 1972, starting out for the Rock Island Railroad, Ill. as a brakeman and a conductor. Krieger moved to Wyoming to start working for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1976 and has lived in the state ever since. Ehrenberger is one of the oldest Union Pacific retirees in the state of Wyoming. Starting his work for the railroad in 1953, 16-year-old Ehrenberger became a train-crew caller in Cheyenne. During this time, he picked up photography from a coworker. “A railroader who was a shutterbug back when I was just starting out gave me a Graflex (an early camera model) on the condition I would work for the railroad,” said Ehrenberger. Over the years, Ehrenberger has photographed locomotives in Wyoming for railroad publications, while also working for Union Pacific. In 1988, Ehrenberger retired as the Manager of Operating Rules and Safety. With help from her sister, Bath applied for a railroad position in Laramie. She was pushed in the direction of a secretary job, but since the pay was better in the railyard, she decided to be a switchman. “It was very intimidating, just a different deal,” said Bath. With railyard work being a male-dominated field, Bath and other women were often the minority. Bath worked as a switchman in Laramie for nine years before changing fields to working on the road for better pay.
