Preserving Hallowed Grounds:
Caretakers of West Virginia's Black Cemeteries
West Virginia is home to thousands of cemeteries, though the exact number remains largely unknown, according to a 2021 report from the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture, and History. Among these cemeteries, Black cemeteries in West Virginia are among the most endangered. Many Black cemetery caretakers have had family members responsible for maintaining grounds for generations. However, due to urbanization in rural areas, racial tensions, and other underlying issues within their communities, many Black West Virginian communities have relocated, resulting in fewer people available and or interested in caring for the cemeteries.
